Jacotte Brokken talks to Christian Clauwers about his book ‘Frozen Heritage’. In the Arctic permafrost of Svalbard (better known as Spitsbergen), there are three vaults dedicated to the protection and preservation of biodiversity and human heritage. The world seed bank is the best known, but there is also a gene bank and a heritage bank. Photographer Christian Clauwers visited all three and wrote a book about these hidden archives in the most extreme environment on earth.

In de arctische permafrost van Svalbard (beter bekend als Spitsbergen), bevinden zich drie kluizen, gewijd aan de bescherming en het behoud van biodiversiteit en menselijk erfgoed. De wereldzadenbank is de bekendste, maar er is er ook genenbank en een erfgoedbank. Fotograaf Christian Clauwers bezocht ze alle drie en maakte een boek over deze verborgen archieven in de in de meest extreme omgeving ter wereld.

Deep inside an Arctic mountain, in one of the world's northernmost settlements, is a vault that aims to protect the world's data from a global apocalypse. The Arctic World Archive (AWA) was partly inspired by the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and sits just down the road from it, hundreds of metres inside an abandoned coal mine.

The Global Seed Vault. It is so hard to get in, but he is one of the few people that managed to get in! The vault in the permafrost in Svalbard safeguards the world's largest collection of food crops. It's like a backup plan or life insurance for humanity, preserving our biodiversity for future generations.
Tribal cultures in Melanesia: Christian shared his experiences interacting with tribe leaders in remote islands, where communication was nonverbal. His stories about these tribes are fascinating, but their likelihood of disappearing is high.
The treats to the Arctic: We discussed the melting ice at the poles and its impact on Earth's climate and fresh water supply. Christian's firsthand experiences in the Arctic shed light on the urgency of preserving this unique and fragile ecosystem.

Vandaag is het precies 125 jaar geleden dat in Antwerpen het onderzoeksschip Belgica vertrok richting Antarctica. Het was de eerste wetenschappelijke expeditie ooit naar het gebied. De missie onder leiding van de toen 31-jarige Belg Adrien de Gerlache werd een helse tocht waarbij de bemanning ongepland moest overwinteren in het zuidpoolgebied, iets wat niemand hen ooit voordeed. We belden erover met pool- en oceaanfotograaf Christian Clauwers, die in mei een expeditie heeft meegedaan op de nieuwe Belgica en op dit moment in Svalbard (Spitsbergen) zit.

Christian Clauwers is professioneel natuurfotograaf, en maakte al veel expedities mee naar onherbergzaam gebieden om de relatie tussen mens en natuur te onderzoeken. Zijn foto's laten zien wat de gevolgen zijn van de klimaatopwarming voor de natuur. Hij probeert de beleidsmakers op die manier te blijven overtuigen dat er maatregelen moeten genomen worden op klimaatopwarming tegen te gaan. Christian is net terug van de Noordpool en binnenkort vertrekt hij naar Groenland, vertelde hij in Start Je Dag.

Een uithoek van de wereld, ver afgelegen, bar, eenzaam, kaal, ruig, onbewoonbaar, ongastvrij, woest, verlaten, dat zijn de plekken waar hij wil zijn.
Christian Clauwers omschrijven als 'ontdekkingsreiziger' kan een beetje pathetisch klinken in deze tijd, nu elke plek op aarde in kaart is gebracht en nu je - als er geen coronabeperkingen zijn - in een etmaal aan de andere kant van de wereld staat. En toch is Clauwers een ontdekkingsreiziger.
Nauwelijks bereikbare plekken, onbereisbare bestemmingen, ze bestaan namelijk nog altijd. Maar 'nauwelijks bereikbaar' moet je tegen Christian Clauwers niet zeggen. Hij zet door. Kerguelen, de McMurdovallei met haar bloedwaterval op Antarctica, Île de la Possession of een van de andere Crozeteilanden, Tristan da Cunha - het eiland dat het verst van elk continent verwijderd is, het Peter I-eiland, Clauwers heeft ze bereisd en gefotografeerd.
