Christian Clauwers is a co-founder, an advisory board member and the first Belgian contributor to the Arctic World Archive (AWA)
The Arctic World Archive (AWA) is a secure vault in Svalbard, dedicated to preserving the world’s most valuable data and cultural heritage for future generations. As climate change, conflict, and cyber threats increasingly endanger our shared human history, AWA safeguards critical knowledge in a resilient, long-term format designed to withstand the test of time.
By immortalizing photographs of vulnerable island communities, Christian Clauwers give them a voice —and raised an urgent alarm about rising sea levels. With the support of BELSPO (Belgian Science Policy Office), he also archived images of the research vessel R/V BELGICA, preserving a visual legacy of Belgium’s 2022 marine science efforts for future generations.
Stored in Arctic permafrost, AWA ensures history remains intact for centuries to come.
